During the World Circular Economy Forum held in 2024, two initiatives aimed at advancing the circular economy globally were announced.
The first initiative announced was the establishment of the EU Circular Economy Resource Centre. This center aims to promote the sharing and adoption of circular economy policies and business models between the EU and other countries. The European Commission has committed a significant amount of 15 million euros to this centre. The center will promote collaboration and knowledge sharing and contribute to the development of the circular economy worldwide.
Secondly, the "Transition to a Circular Economy in Eastern and Southern Africa" program was announced. This program aims to promote the circular economy in Eastern and Southern Africa and provides significant funding of 40 million euros over five years. The program will support green and circular business models, especially in packaging and plastic waste and electronic and e-waste value chains. It will also include a range of activities to increase capacity building, policy support and financial access.
These two initiatives will make significant contributions to promoting the circular economy globally and creating sustainable societies. Additionally, these initiatives are considered an important step to consolidate the EU's leadership in the circular economy field and promote the adoption of the circular economy worldwide.
