Ms. Hülya Çakır, Branch Manager from the General Directorate of Environmental Management, emphasized the importance of zero waste awareness and practices and expressed the objectives of the workshop and the contributions it will provide for the participants.

Each day, in order to facilitate discussions before the working groups, informative presentations were made by the Ministry and project experts on the following topics:

  • Waste Prevention and Reduction Strategies and Good Practices from the EU
  • Developments in Zero Waste Management System
  • Evaluating the Advantages and Disadvantages of Recyclable Waste Collection Methods
  • Impact of Integration of Economic Instruments on Aggregation

During the 3-day workshop, the current status of the zero waste management system was analyzed through “SWOT Analysis” (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats). Then, working groups were formed on “Improvement Suggestions for Increasing Collection Efficiency of Recyclable Waste”. Participants made detailed analyses and shared improvement suggestions under the headings of Legislation, Inspection and Criminal Sanctions, Infrastructure and Technology, Economic Tools, Institutional Structuring and Training and Awareness Raising to make the collection processes of different waste streams more efficient. Afterwards, intensive interactive sessions and working groups were organized under the title “Zero Waste Management System Improvement Suggestions”.

The innovative approaches, implementation models and solution-oriented strategies developed for participants, local governments and other stakeholders to achieve zero waste targets faster and more effectively are expected to make significant contributions to the “Technical Assistance for Assessing Turkey's Potential for Transition to Circular Economy (DEEP) Project”.
